The Flame 8x12
This image was taken on a trip to Arizona in Jan. 2006. Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon that was created by water cutting into the soil until a slot is formed that is only a few feet wide and about 80-100 feet deep. You need a Navajo guide to visit this area. Slot canyons can be very dangerous places if there is any chance of rain. Eleven people were drowned a few years ago when they were caught in a flash flood in this canyon. When the early morning sun lines up with the direction of the slot the light from above spills into the upper areas of the canyon illuminating the red rock, making it look as if it were on fire. In the image this is contrasted against the textured mauve tones of the rock in the lower canyon. This images was taken near the entrance where the bright orange area looks like a flame.
